Last week, I attended my first PGA Show in Orlando, Florida, and let me tell you—when they say you learn something new every day, they mean it.
Day 1 & 2: SBO Conference
I kicked off my PGA Show experience with the Section Business Operations (SBO) Conference, which ran for the first two days of the week. This conference underscored the importance of teamwork. Before this, I had limited interaction with other sections, so being surrounded by accomplished professionals from the North Florida, Middle Atlantic, and Aloha Sections, among others, was eye-opening.
One of our key sessions focused on the “Predictive Index,” a tool we had prepared for in advance. Led by Kelly Gilley, PGA, Executive Director of the Northern Texas Section, the discussion emphasized the importance of self-awareness and understanding how others work. She explained that recognizing different working styles fosters better communication and collaboration in the workplace.
Both days also featured PGA of America REACH Foundation breakout sessions, where we had candid discussions about various initiatives under the PGA REACH umbrella. Deep conversations were had, best practices were shared, and one thing became clear: no Section can accomplish their goals alone. Success in this industry relies on collaboration. It was inspiring to witness different Sections coming together. Sure we learn about teamwork from a young age, but the SBO Conference truly solidified its significance in our profession.
Day 3 & 4: The PGA Show
The energy shifted as the main event—the PGA Show, often called the “Super Bowl” for golf professionals—began. A recurring theme throughout my experience was authenticity: being yourself, being authentic, and finding your path.
This was also the start of the PGA WORKS Fellow activities, and I was thrilled to meet my class of WORKS Fellows. The PGA WORKS team at the PGA of America organized a packed day of activities to ensure we got the full experience. We began with a tour of the Show floor, an overwhelming yet exhilarating moment. Walking through the main doors, I was taken aback by the sheer size of the space—I didn’t even know where to start. The team guided us through various industry booths, including BruMate, Fore All, Eastside Golf, Trackman, Club Car, and Dunning – all of which were welcoming and supportive of young professionals eager to enter the golf industry.
Next, we attended a panel discussion on “Building Your Personal Brand.” Industry influencers with distinct personal brands shared insights, but one moment stood out the most—Abby Parsons, PGA, Head Golf Professional at Pinnacle Peak Country Club and a social media influencer, spoke about her journey. As a Gen-Z, female Head Golf Professional, she initially felt intimidated, but she soon realized that her uniqueness was her strength. She encouraged us to embrace our individuality because that’s what makes us stand out.
Throughout the rest of the day, we had the opportunity to meet incredible industry professionals, including PGA of America Secretary Eric Eshleman, PGA, Chief Executive Officer Derek Sprague, PGA, and past PGA WORKS Fellows at the “Career Pathways: PGA WORKS Fellow to Full-Time Professional” panel. We also connected with PGA of America C-Suite officers and other distinguished leaders in the golf industry.
The common theme in every conversation? Be yourself, be authentic, and use your time as a PGA WORKS Fellow to gain experience. We grow the game not just through collective efforts but through the unique talents, personalities, and experiences that each individual brings to the table.
Final Thoughts
Reflecting on my time at the SBO Conference and PGA Show, I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity. Every conversation, story, and meeting taught me something valuable. But what I will carry with me, is that the golf industry is just so powerful. It is full of individuals, companies, professionals doing amazing things, but it is only as powerful as it is by golfers and golf fanatics everywhere coming together through thick and thin. And it is by each person being authentically themselves and bringing their own unique qualities to the table that help continue to grow the game.
Through PGA WORKS, we are committed to help equip the next generation of leaders. It’s our why behind being as intentional as possible when it comes to opening doors for new professionals to make an impact on the golf industry and beyond. We’re serious about ensuring golf being both a game and a business open for anyone — and it takes all of us to get there. Learn more & apply for a PGA WORKS Fellowship →
